JOIN Platinum Standards on Accessibility and Inclusion
The 14th BLN Breakfast Series Event sponsored by Service Canada
Service Canada was the proud sponsor of the Ontario JOIN’s Business Leadership Breakfast meeting that was held at the Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre. The topic of the event was “JOIN Platinum Standards on Accessibility and Inclusion”.
The event was sold out with more than 120 registrants, comprising of Job Developers, Service Providers and Employers (included some small and medium sized organizations). The attendance in the morning was excellent and we received several calls immediately following the event attesting to the relevance and importance to organizations, not only in the province of Ontario, but also the impact the JOIN Standards will have for employees, customers and communities across the country. The formal post event survey results were also very positive.
We cannot look at accessibility in isolation. We also have to start thinking about the dialogue around accessibility and disability and change that attitude by shifting to more a vision or language of differing abilities rather than disabilities.
Pina D’Intino, Panelist
Sam Hayter, Assistant Director Human Resources, The Westin Harbour Castle, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Canada opened the session:
We have a diverse committee across Canada. I can't stress enough, diversity, employment equity is not human resources driven. If you take anything away from today, please, it is not human resources driven. It has to be led by senior leadership. That is key, it has to have buy in from senior leadership.
The first part of the audit has allowed Starwood to look back on the activities in 2012 in regards to our training for accessibility. Having met the requirement the Platinum Standard Considerations are what we need to make sure we aren't just meeting but exceeding those with accessibility concerns. It has given us great ideas to improve on when we have done and excitement about moving forward.
We feel the Platinum Standard to Starwood is of benefit to our guests and our employee and shareholders. It will allow us to become the lifestyle hospitality company of choice for all.
The panel was moderated by John Shield, Professor, Dept. of Politics and Public Administration, Ryerson University. And integrated by:
