TD Bank Financial Group hosted and sponsored our 2nd breakfast series session on the 54th Floor of TD Tower
At 8:00 a.m. a lovely breakfast was placed on each of the tables. Introductions and welcoming remarks with special thanks to our sponsors were given by Janna Erichsen, Vice-Chair of JOIN Board. Anna Sheehan, Senior Manager, Corporate Diversity MC'd the event and introduced President and CEO of TD Canada Trust, Tim Hockey who was extremely engaging and commented on the importance of ensuring that each customer (whether they have a disability or not) has a great experience when they bank with TD and he wanted to ensure that each employee at TD works in an environment where they can achieve their career goals and work in an inclusive and accessible work environment. He quoted that "hiring persons with disabilities isn't just the right thing to do, it's good for business."
Following Mr. Hockey's remarks, Panel Moderator, Phillipa O'Brien, AVP, Human Resources Retail Banking Products welcomed panel members, Sousan Zaribaf, Merchant Services Specialist, Michelle Ramos, Administrative Officer, Carol Tai-Pow, Manager, TD Insurance, and Phil Faubert, Senior Manager, Assistive Technologies. An excellent panel discussion ensued where individuals on the panel shared their experiences with accessibility and accommodation in the workplace - both the good and the bad - and their experiences and suggestions to help employers in the audience get it right.
Dauna Jones-Simmonds, Chair of the Business Leadership Network Council for JOIN and Diversity Manager, Human Resources, TD Canada Trust engaged the employers in the room in "Why and How to become a JOIN Business Leadership Network Member."
Closing Remarks and special thanks were delivered by Tim Hockey. An interesting analogy referencing the "race for space" with the Russians provoked final thoughts amongst the audience around the realities of the cost of accommodation and how important it is to think differently and engage the person themselves in the complete process. Tim encouraged everyone to attend the tours of the Adaptive Technology Labs with Phil Faubert.
